What a Digital Twin is here
In the physical-product context, a Digital Twin is a persistent digital identity for a real item that holds its data, records its events and offers services over time. It is not a 3D model or a factory simulation. It is the durable online counterpart of a product that a QR code or GS1 Digital Link resolves to.
Twin, passport and QR are not the same
The QR code is the carrier. The Digital Product Passport is the regulated dataset. The Digital Twin is the broader, living identity: it can present the passport, but it also accumulates ownership, care, repair, resale and authentication events and can offer services to the holder.
Why persistence matters
A seasonal ecommerce URL disappears when the product is delisted. A Digital Twin is anchored to a persistent identifier, so the item stays addressable years after it was sold. That persistence is what turns a one-time compliance page into a channel for circular services and continuous product intelligence.
Model, batch and unit
A twin can exist at model, batch or serialized-unit level. Unit-level twins allow individual traceability, resale and authentication; model-level twins are enough for many passport and marketing use cases. The right level depends on the product, the cost and the regulation.
