What it is

France’s coût environnemental expresses the lifecycle impact of a garment in impact points. The methodology covers climate, biodiversity, water and resources, pollution, durability-related factors, microfibre release and end-of-life effects. A higher score means a higher environmental cost.

Data brands should prepare

  • Product category and mass.
  • Fibre composition and material origin.
  • Spinning, fabric formation, finishing and assembly geographies.
  • Transport and distribution assumptions.
  • Durability and commercial-practice parameters required by the method.
  • Evidence, calculation version and publication date.

Why this belongs in the product data layer

The score is not a substitute for primary product and supply-chain data. Treat the calculation as a versioned derived result: retain inputs, method version, output and publication status. That lets the same governed catalogue support the product page, environmental display, DPP and internal scenario analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Is the French environmental cost mandatory?

The French Ministry states that the display remains voluntary for clothing brands, while its calculation and communication are regulated when used.

Is it only a carbon score?

No. It is a multi-impact lifecycle score expressed in impact points, not simply kilograms of CO₂e.
